3 – Thesis Writing for Beginners
This course will prepare participants for thesis writing specifically tailored to the specific requirements and styles of thesis writing in USM. This course will look at several features of thesis writing including the formats and referencing styles, and the common weaknesses found in students writing. Special focus is given to the APA style, while other styles are also discussed. This course will benefit most those who are starting to wirte their thesis and those who wish to deepen their knowledge about APA writing style. Students who wish to know how to format their tables and figures, the preferred spelling to use, the correct usage of punctuations, the writing of citations in-text and reference list, etc., you will find this workshop very useful. Complete ppt notes and appendices on various referencing styles will be provided to participants.

What kind of style are supervisors, reviewers, and editors looking for when they make decisions about an academic paper or dissertation? Most people enjoy reading documents that are clear, succinct and to-the-point; but budding academics often feel they are expected to write in a style that is complex, verbose, or indirect. In this workshop we consider what it means to write “academically.” Focusing on academic abstracts, we will look at linguistic choices and stylistic issues that are particularly relevant for academic writing.
